Welcome to Indiana Open - Restoring Original Birth Certificate access to adult adoptees and their families!  We are the adult adoptees, birth families, and adoptive families with adoption connections to Indiana.

We seek to change the adoption laws of Indiana to support the ever changing needs of those living adoption.  We fully support unrestricted access to the original birth certificate by adult adoptees and their birth families.  We fully support honesty in adoption. This kind of law does not include the general public.

We encourage all members of the Indiana Adoption Triad to join us in changing these laws.
Adoption today is so much more than the traditional closed adoption.  It now encompasses surrogacy, open adoptionsin vitro fertilization, donor conception, and more.

We have the backing of Brown vs. Board of Education where the Supreme Court Decision stated that SEPARATE IS NOT EQUAL.  The state laws of Indiana treats adoption separately. It gives others special immunities and privileges which are strictly forbidden in Article One Section 23 of the Indiana Constitution. We have the United States Privacy Act of 1974 which states that all American citizens shall have access to the documents that the government, including state governments, must let us view. We also have the protection of the Fourth amendment of the Bill of Rights which allows us to be secure in our papers.

Birthmothers do not have the right to total confidentiality at the expense of their children.  99% of birthmothers do not want that right according to many of the states that have allowed adult adoptee access. There is not a termination of parental rights form that has this in this country.  In fact our state laws specifically state that all birth parents are divested of all rights which includes the right to deny an adult adoptee's access to their original birth certificate.

The adoption industry does not speak for us nor will we allow them to continue to do so.  We have voices that need to be heard.  We will no longer be silent.  We formed this organization, Indiana Open, to give us a platform from which to speak.

The Indiana State Legislators must decide whether adult adoptees are adults, children or mere commodities.  If we are adults, then we must be treated as such.  We must be given equal treatment under the law.   Adult adoptees and their families are so much more than the status of our births.  We are your parents, your grandparents, your siblings, your children, your coworkers, and your veterans.

The time has come to treat adult adoptees as American citizens with fully recognized rights, responsibilities and privileges.  It is time to end the special privileges and immunities warranted to adoption agencies and their lobbyist, the NCFA

MISSION STATEMENT:

Indiana Open is a grassroots organization that is comprised of adoptees, birth families and adoptive families.  We are seeking to give unrestricted access for all adult adoptees and their families to the original birth certificate.
